Are you developing a demonstrably high-impact project in animal welfare, effective altruism infrastructure or research addressing risks from advanced AI? Effective Altruism Funds (EA Funds) offers a continuously open grant application route for several specialised funds. Its published application page lists a grant range of roughly US$1,000–500,000, but this does not mean every cause area is accepting applications.

Verification date: 20 October 2026. This independent Africads guide distinguishes official grant conditions from preparation advice. Where the funder does not disclose a term, it should not be assumed.

What is different about EA Funds?

EA Funds is not a generic donor for all development projects. Its grant managers look for opportunities with unusually high expected benefit, a tractable approach and strong comparative value for money. A project should explain what will change, why the proposed intervention is effective, how uncertain the underlying assumptions are and what would plausibly happen without the requested funding.

Animal Welfare Fund

The Animal Welfare Fund looks for promising animal-welfare improvements, particularly neglected species and locations, factory-farm animal suffering and scalable advocacy or welfare interventions. African research or advocacy teams may find a pathway here when their work has credible, large-scale animal-welfare implications. Ordinary pet rescue or generic conservation projects should not assume eligibility without fund-specific support.

EA Infrastructure Fund

The Infrastructure Fund supports projects that help effective altruism-oriented organisations and communities perform better through capacity, talent, information, learning and other infrastructure. It is not a generic capacity building grant for every NGO. Applicants should show a concrete contribution to the donor’s specific community and causes.

Transformative AI Fund

The Transformative AI Fund offers early-stage grants to people, new organisations and existing teams undertaking work on global catastrophic risks, especially risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence and related emerging threats. Merely using AI to improve marketing or business operations is not a sufficient funder match.

Global Health and Development is not open to applications

Although EA Funds lists a Global Health and Development Fund on its website, its current official application page clearly says this fund is not accepting applications. An African public-health NGO should not be told that this fund has a current open grant window. The donor directs interested applicants to consider GiveWell as a separate route. Verify that organisation’s current process independently before applying there.

How to judge your fit before applying

Compare your programme with the targeted fund’s current strategy and earlier grants. Prepare a concise theory of change, counterfactual case, strongest impact evidence, outcomes rather than outputs, material risks, budget rationale and honest uncertainty. For example, a cage-free animal-welfare campaign could compare additional animals affected against cost and the chance of changing industry practice. These are editorial preparation suggestions, not a substitute for EA Funds’ actual form.

Where to apply

Read the official funding page, choose the open fund that matches your project and use the linked application form. The application is rolling for those funds; confirm the live status before submission. The advertised US$1,000–500,000 band describes the broad platform, not a guaranteed grant or minimum for a given application.

What to do next

Check the official donor or application page and supporting official programme information before acting. For internal assessment, the Africads Funding Readiness Toolkit can help clarify eligibility, organisational evidence, budget and delivery capacity. GrantsWriterAI may be useful for permitted drafting tasks when the funder’s submission rules allow it, but applicants remain responsible for accurate evidence and funder compliance.
