The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) provides grants and other forms of risk capital to scalable innovations that can improve the lives of underserved and low-income populations.
Application timing: open window rather than a single fixed deadline.
Pilot stage: up to USD 230,000.
Test & Transition: up to approximately USD 2.3 million.
Eligible organizations: nonprofits, social enterprises, for-profit companies, government agencies and research institutions; individuals must apply through an affiliated organization.
Current strategic focus
GIF is currently prioritising innovations that strengthen climate resilience and expand inclusive economic opportunity, with a strong geographic focus on Africa and Asia. Its broader investment model is built around evidence, cost-effectiveness and credible potential to scale.
Who should consider applying?
This is a fit for organizations with an innovative model that is more effective than existing approaches and a credible pathway to reach large numbers of people. It is less suited to conventional stand-alone projects without a scaling thesis.
Review GIF’s official funding criteria and funding stages.
Should you pursue GIF funding?
Best fit for: organizations with an innovation that has some evidence of effectiveness, a credible route to scale and the potential to improve outcomes for underserved populations at substantially larger reach.
Probably not a fit if: the proposal is a conventional one-off project, there is no evidence or learning plan, or the organization cannot explain how the model could scale cost-effectively beyond the pilot setting.
Africads application tips: quantify the problem and addressable population; show what evidence already exists and what the next funding stage will test; and make the scale economics as clear as the impact story.
Before you pursue a larger funding stage: Check whether your systems can manage it
Use the Africads Award Absorption Capacity Check to test whether finance, staffing, procurement, MEL, reporting and delivery systems can handle the scale and complexity of the funding stage you are targeting.
