Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) provides rapid and flexible funding for African feminist and women’s rights defenders, organizations, collectives and movements responding to urgent situations.

Rapid Response Grant ceiling: up to USD 15,000.
Geography: Africa’s five regions.
Timing: applications accepted for urgent situations rather than through a fixed annual deadline.

Core funding criteria

UAF-Africa looks for actions that are strategic, unanticipated, time-urgent, sustainable and supported by other feminist or women’s-rights actors. Rapid Response Grants are intended for interventions that must be implemented within about three months.

Who can apply?

UAF-Africa supports both formal and informal groups. Its FAQ states that unregistered collectives can apply where an appropriate registered group can act as a fiscal sponsor. The group must be women-led, with women in decision-making positions and at least 70% of members identifying as women.

Official application route

Review UAF-Africa’s grant types and application routes. The Rapid Response Grant form confirms the USD 15,000 maximum.

Should your group apply?

Best fit for: African feminist and women’s-rights groups facing an urgent, unexpected situation where a rapid intervention can protect rights, people, organizing space or movement momentum.

Probably not a fit if: the proposed activity is routine annual programming, lacks genuine urgency, or the group cannot meet UAF-Africa’s women-led requirements.

Africads application tips: explain what changed and why action cannot wait; connect the request to a specific feminist or women’s-rights outcome; and keep the response achievable within the rapid implementation period.
